JOINT HAPPY HOUR WITH OSCEOLA COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION: June 22, 2010. CFAWL and the Osceola County Bar Association hosted a Joint Happy Hour at Vintage Vino in Kissimmee. Approximately 18 attendees turned out to share fabulous food and wine. Our Osceola colleagues were ecstatic that we hosted an event in their neck of the woods.
JULY LUNCHEON: Judicial Candidate Forum. July 2, 2010. CFAWL hosted judicial candidates from Seminole and Orange Counties, where a moderater posed questions to the candidates of the various local judicial races.
JOINT HAPPY HOUR BENEFITING THE ROCK LAKE ELEMENTARY BACK PACK PROJECT: July 27, 2010. Young Lawyers Section of the Orange County Bar Association, the Central Florida Association for Women Lawyers and the Legal Marketing Association co-hosted 75 attendees at a happy hour at Urban Flats in Downtown Orlando. The event raised $1,050.00 to benefit the Back Pack Project, which provides school supplies to children at Rock Lake Elementary who would not otherwise have the resources needed for a successful school year.
AUGUST LUNCHEON: Cheryl McDuffie James, Managing Director of Business Imaging. August 6, 2010. CFAWL hosted Ms. James, who presented “Surviving & Thriving During a Turbulent Economy.” The primary focus of Ms. James’ presentation was how firms can not only survive, but thrive during today’s turbulent economy. Her presentation focused on 3 key elements: (1) Client billing; (2) Customer Service; and (3) Promoting through the Internet. Ms. James explored billing rates, whether clients really feel attorneys are committed to their cause, and how to maximize a firm’s presence via the Internet. Ms. James discussed tools to not only maintain business, but grow it.
FAMILY PIZZA NIGHT: August 17, 2010. CFAWL members and their families gathered at Kini's Sports Kitchen in College Park for a Family Pizza Night, where kids were allowed to make their own pizzas.
JUDGE DOHERTY'S INVESTITURE: August 20, 2010. Representatives of CFAWL attended the investiture of Judge Patricia Doherty at the Orange County Courthouse, with the reception at Lake Lucerne.
SEPTEMBER LUNCHEON: Doug Gaskins, Principal Partner of Business Appraisal Group. September 3, 2010. Mr. Gaskins spoke on “How Attorney’s Discredit Their Own Experts” and obtained Florida Bar CLE approval for this engagement.
TEA AT THE RITZ-CARLTON: September 12, 2010. CFAWL hosted a Tea at the Ritz-Carlton, Grande Lakes. Attendees enjoyed tea as only the Ritz can do it, complete with finger sandwiches, tea breads, pastries, fresh baked scones and Devonshire cream.
FAWL NETWORKING RECEPTION: September 24, 2010. CFAWL sponsored the Leadership Networking Reception on at FAWL's 2010 Midyear Meeting (Hilton, Orlando).
OCTOBER 2010 LUNCHEON: Political Candidate Forum, October 8, 2010. CFAWL hosted the candidates (or their representatives) for the upcoming general election: (1) Mike Yost (R) for US House District 3; (2) Jennifer Thompson for Orange County Commissioner District 4; (3) Mayra Uribe for Orange County Commissioner District 4; (4) Campaign representative for Bill Segal for Orange County Mayor; and (5) Campaign representative for Teresa Jacobs for Orange County Mayor.
CPR COURSE: October 9, 2010. CFAWL offered a CPR course to members and their families. The course included dual certification (which includes infant training).
NEW MEMBER RECEPTION: October 14, 2010. Current and new members of CFAWL gathered at the Sonesta Hotel in downtown Orlando to welcome the new members, and enjoy fabulous food, wine and friends!
COMMUNITY OUTREACH FAIR: November 2, 2010. Shakespeare Center
OCBA/VOLUNTARY BARS JOINT HAPPY HOUR: November 4, 2010. The OCBA, CFAWL and Other Voluntary Bars gathered for drinks, appetizers and socializing with friends and colleagues at Ember on Central Avenue in Downtown Orlando. The event benefited Second Harvest Food Bank.
NOVEMBER 2010 LUNCHEON: Lauren Kennedy, November 5, 2010. Ms. Lauren Kennedy spoke on Women’s safety and personal self-defense. Ms. Kennedy is the Chief Operating Officer of the Volusia/Flagler YMCA, a mother of 2, and is a Master-Ranked of Chun Kuk Do, the martial art form founded by Chuck Norris.
THIRD ANNUAL ROCK LAKE ELEMENTARY “TEACH IN” EVENT: November 17, 2010. CFAWL participated in Orange County’s annual "Teach In," an event where the community is invited into Orange County public schools to share experiences regarding career choices, goal-setting and academic preparation with students. For the third year in a row, CFAWL members were invited to "teach" 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes at Rock Lake Elementary School.
CHOCOLATE MAKING PARTY:November 10, 2010. Members gathered at Farris and Foster's in Baldwin Park to enjoy an evening of networking and making chocolates.
ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY: December 8, 2010. Programs Director Kimberly Lorenz and the CFAWL Board hosted the members for our annual Holiday Party. This year's event was located at Grace Hopper Hall in Baldwin Park, where attendees joined one another for some Holiday cheer. Gifts for CFAWL's Angel Tree Project were also collected at the event.
HOLIDAYS IN JANUARY: January 11, 2011. CFAWL, the OCBA Young Lawyers Section and the Hispanic Bar Association partnered to host the 2nd Annual Holidays-in-January WineDown at Urban Flats. Attendees were treated to wine, beer and appetizers, and all event proceeds benefitted children at Arnold Palmer Pediatric Oncology Wing, United Cerebral Palsy & The Boys and Girls Club. The proceeds were used to provide gifts and necessities to children who did not receive anything during the traditional holiday season.
FEBRUARY 2011 LUNCHEON: Patricia T. Savitz, February 4, 2011. Ms. Patricia T. Savitz is a Senior Attorney with The Florida Bar in the Lawyer Regulation Division. She spoke to CFAWL on the rules and requirements for trust accounts.
SELF DEFENSE SEMINAR: February 8, 2011. Ms. Lauren Kennedy, who spoke to CFAWL at our November luncheon, returned to CFAWL to provide hands-on, self-defense instruction. The seminar was held at the Orlando Public Library.
PROFESSIONAL WOMEN'S EXCHAGE: February 16, 2011. CFAWL hosted another successful networking event at the Crown Plaza in Downtown Orlando. Net proceeds will benefit A Place for Children.
MARCH LUNCHEON: David Henry, March 4, 2011. David Henry of Henry Potter Civil Mediation presented a thought-provoking seminar on “Gender Advantages in Mediation.” Discussion included how gender can work to the advantage and disadvantage of attorneys, and strategies by which women attorneys may unknowingly influence the conduct of other mediation participants. The seminar also identified mediation pitfalls and suggested some useful – but often ignored – pre-mediation tactics that will maximize clients’ potential for favorable resolution during the mediation session.
JUDICIAL RECEPTION: March 10, 2011. CFAWL hosted its annual reception honoring Central Florida's judiciary at the Courtyard at Lake Lucerne.
APRIL LUNCHEON: On April 13, 2011, CFAWL Judicial Liaison Antoinette Plogstedt, Immediate Past President Christine Arendas, and Immediate Past Co-Programs Director Silvia Ibanez participated in a panel discussion entitled "Women in the Legal Field" hosted by the Women Lawyers Association at the Barry University School of Law.
VOLUNTARY BAR JOINT HAPPY HOUR: April 21, 2011. CFAWL co-hosted a Happy Hour to Benefit Relief Efforts in Japan with several other local voluntary bar associations. The evening was a complete success! Over 200 people were in attendance, and over $5,000 was raised. Many thanks to all CFAWL members who attended the event and made generous donations to those in such great need in Japan. Further thanks to Kim Lorenz, Silvia Ibanez, Tiffany Faddis, Kim Lopez and Lisa Gong who served on the committee that planned the evening.
TEA FOR TWO AND MORE: Saturday, April 30, 2011. A lovely time was had by all at the Spring Tea for Two and More, held at The Olde Cup & Saucer in Longwood. All of our attendees were decked out in their finest, and sampled the teas and treats of the venue while getting to know each other better. A very special thank you to Judges McIntosh, Nelson and Alva for attending, as well as all the ladies who showed up to make this event a success. By request, we'll do this again soon!
TALBOT'S SHOPPING EVENT: Wednesday, May 4, 2011. If there's one thing CFAWL members know, it's how to have a good time!! The folks at Talbot's learned this first-hand as nearly 30 of our members attended a very special private shopping event at their store in Winter Park. Guests mingled and munched over a spread of tasty hors d'oeuvres, desserts and wine while browsing the store's new Spring Collection. They then enjoyed a fashion tutorial by one of Talbot's personal shoppers who showed us how to transform the standard-issue basic black suit into an entire wardrobe of ensembles, perfect for anything from a breakfast meeting to court to happy hour! In addition, our members brought a literal truckload of lovely, gently-used items which were gratefully received by the non-profit organization Dress for Success.
MAY LUNCHEON: Jane Goddard, May 6, 2011. Jane Goddard from The Center for Earth Jurisprudence spoke to CFAWL about changes in enviornmental laws, green issues and how these affect each and every one of us. CLE credit is pending.
LUNCHEON FEATURING JUSTICE QUINCE. On May 10, 2011, CFAWL hosted a luncheon at the Orange County Public Library, which featured Florida Supreme Court Justice Peggy Quince as the keynote speaker. Justice Quince addressed several issues, including issues effecting the judiciary during the past legislative session.

GRANDE DAME RECEPTION: Thursday, May 19, 2011. The Grande Dames of Central Florida (i.e., women who have been practicing law for twenty years or more) gathered for an evening of networking and catching up with old friends over wine and delicious savories. While many esteemed women were in attendance, the following were recognized for their "first" accomplishments out of the assembled group: Judge Maura Smith - First CFAWL President; Judge Sally Kest - first admitted to The Florida Bar; Judge Jacqueline Griffin - first Judge to serve on a Florida District Court of Appeal; and Judge Dorothy Russell - first Judge to serve on the bench. Congratulations, Grande Dames, on all you have accomplished throughout your careers and being trail blazers for the generations of female attorneys to come!


RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE SHARE A MEAL: Wednesday, May 25th. CFAWL hosted the Share-a-Meal Program at the Ronald McDonald House at Arnold Palmer Hospital. A great “breakfast-for-dinner “ buffet was served to the RMH residents, consisting of eggs, ham, sausage, muffins, bagels and pancakes. A special thanks goes out to all of our volunteers, who contributed the food as well as their time.
