MINI SPA NIGHT: July 13, 2011.  Over fifteen CFAWL members attended CFAWL’s first Spa Night at Baldwin Nails.  Attendees enjoyed great conversation while attentive spa representatives pampered them. Guests didn’t have to lift a finger!  While relaxing in massage chairs and enjoying conversation with fellow members, the ladies were served sparkling wine or  water, cucumber sandwiches, and Jacquelynne Regan’s delicious cake pops.

JULY LUNCHEON.  On July 8, 2011, keynote speakers Judges John and Sally Kest presented "Problems commonly encountered by women lawyers in discovery, at hearings and in trials," which earned attendees 1.0 hour of CLE general credit.  The presentation will explored: (1) general observations from trial judges, (2) discovery problems and practices, (3) tips for more effective presentations at hearings, and (4) trial considerations particular to women lawyers.

CFAWL-OCBA JOINT LUNCHEON: June 16, 2011.  The 2011 CFAWL-OCBA Joint Luncheon was held at the Church Street Ballroom on Thursday, June 16, 2011.  CFAWL member and current President of The Florida Bar, Mayanne Downs, was the keynote speaker. 

WINE TOAST AND TASTE:  June 16, 2011. CFAWL hosted a toast to its outgoing and incoming Boards of Directors to celebrate their hard work and get to know our new Directors.  Afterwards, members, significant others, and guests enjoyed an Explore France Wine Tasting.

JUNE LUNCHEON:  Past President's Luncheon, June 10, 2011.  CFAWL hosted its annual Past President's and Board Installation Luncheon.  During the luncheon, outgoing President Christine Arendas honored CFAWL's President Presidents and thanked the 2010-2011 Executive Board for all of their hard work.  CFAWL Judicial Liaison Judge Antoinette Plogstedt also swore in CFAWL's 2011-2012 Executive Board.  Further, incoming President Melanie Griffin recognized CFAWL's 2011-2012 Committee Chairs, listed below.  We hope you contact these hard working women to get involved with their committees and assist with CFAWL's events and activities over the coming year.

BACKPACK PROJECT HAPPY HOUR: July 26, 2011. CFAWL, the OCBA Young Lawyers Section and the Federal Bar Association co-hosted a happy hour with the Orange County Bar Association's Young Lawyers Section and the Federal Bar Association. Over $6,000.00 was raised through this event, as well as ongoing efforts throughout the summer. Thanks to the hard work of CFAWL and the organizations with which it partnered, the students at Rock Lake Elementary will have the supplies they need, which they otherwise would not have, for a successful year of learning in 2011-2012. Indeed, with the help of CFAWL and other legal organizations, Rock Lake has risen from an F School to an A School and been nationally recognized as an outstanding school with a Title I designation.

  

  

TABLE FOR EIGHT: July 28, 2011. Past President Christine Arendas and President-Elect Angela Miller hosted a special dessert Table for Eight at the Melting Pot for Phyllis Harley, Paige Carlos, Skinner Louis, Jessica McGinnis and Kellie Hall.  Attendees enjoyed Yin & Yang and Italian Chocolate Fondue, complimented by a sweet dessert wine.

 

YOUNG LAWYERS TABLE FOR EIGHT (OR TWENTY-ONE!): August 11, 2011.  Megan Malec, CFAWL Young Lawyers Chair, hosted the inaugural YLS Table for Eight series in her home. Along with co-hostess Barbara Leach, Megan entertained over twenty young lawyers.  Lots of fun and networking was had amidst platters of finger foods and homemade sangria at this tapas-themed evening.  Many attendees had never participated in a CFAWL Table for Eight previously, but certainly left hooked on the experience and eager to attend their next Table!  Look for details regarding the next YLS Table for Eight to be held on Tuesday, November 8, 2011.  Or to sign-up now, email Megan at mwlmalec@gmail.com.

  

  

 

AUGUST LUNCHEON:  Fall Into Fashion Launch Event:  August 12, 2011.  CFAWL hosted its monthly luncheon with well over 100 members and guests in attendance.  The main beneficiary of CFAWL’s fundraising events, A Place for Children, addressed CFAWL members on the importance of supporting this non-profit as well as other organizations under the umbrella of the Children’s Home Society.  CFAWL also launched its fall event in support of A Place for Children, Fall Into Fashion.  CFAWL was extremely thankful to have representatives from A Place for Children at the luncheon, as well as representatives from the main participants in Fall Into Fashion, Bella, Ginger, Tuni, Catwalk Hair Design and Terrace 390.

  

TABLE FOR EIGHT: August 18, 2011.  CFAWL member Suzanne Meehle hosted a special Table for Eight featuring fresh savories and wine pairings inspired by Napa Valley.  She found fresh, local corn, zucchini, okra, avocados, green tomatoes and salad greens at the farmer's market.  She supplemented that with cheese (chevre and camembert), fresh herbs, mushrooms and peaches for a menu that consisted of camembert and flat bread; roasted corn and zucchini with lemon and cilantro over salad greens dressed with remoulade, served with fresh rolls; ravioli with homemade ricotta in a sauce of mushrooms, shallots and onions with red wine, cream and tarragon; and peaches in balsamic and mint with goat cheese and biscotti for dessert.  Attendees polished off six bottles of good California wine (the Oak Ridge Sauvignon Blanc and Kitchen Sink Red Table Wine were standouts).   The only thing better than dinner was the fabulous company.  

BELLY-DANCING CLASS: August 20, 2011.  CFAWL hosted a private belly-dancing class atOrlando BellyDance.  Attendees found their inner goddess and learned new moves.  The morning was a great workout and a lot of fun!  Afterwards, all attendees enjoyed brunch at the Green Lemon Café.

  

BOARD PARTY:  August 24, 2011. SEPTEMBER LUNCHEON: September 2, 2011.  Patti Savitz, Bar Counsel with the Orlando Branch of The Florida Bar, addressed CFAWL members regarding Ethics and Social Media, providing 1 hour of general CLE credit and 1 hour of ethics CLE credit.

BELLA FALL INTO FASHION PREVIEW PARTY:  September 8, 2011.  CFAWL hosted a a Donna Degnan trunk show at Bella, one of the Winter Park Boutiques participating in Fall Into Fashion. Members enjoyed a cocktail and met Sue Horn, the design assistant and fit specialist from Donna Degnan.

GINGER’S ‘FALL INTO FASHION’ PREVIEW PARTY:  September 14, 2011. CFAWL hosted a Fall Into Fashion Preview Party at Ginger, one of the three Winter Park boutiques that participated in Fall Into Fashion.  Members enjoyed champagne, cupcakes and storewide discounts of 15-40% off.  They also received a free gift if they purchased their ticket to Fall Into Fashion.  The evening was loads of fun, and several members found fabulous outfits for Fall Into Fashion and the rest of the fall season.  CFAWL sincerely thanks store owner and CFAWL member Aimee Hitchner for hosting such a fabulous evening! 

  

NEW MEMBERS RECEPTION:  September 15, 2011.  CFAWL hosted its New Members Reception at the law firm of Dean Mead.  Approximately 170 people, including several members of the judiciary, attended this special event honoring CFAWL's new members and participants in CFAWL's 2011-2012 mentoring program.  Hors d'oeuvres from That Deli in Lake Mary were served along with beer, wine and soda, while the acapella group Yella provided smooth entertainment.  CFAWL is extremely thankful to Dean Mead for hosting this wonderful event. 

  

  

  

  

POTTERY PAINTING:  September 21, 2011.  CFAWL Young Lawyers gathered for a happy hour at Shipyard Emporium to enjoy light refreshments and appetizers, and network and mingle at the start of the fall season.  CFAWL members then painted their own pottery atAll Fired Up.  Beautiful creations from holiday decorations to platters fit to serve guests at a party were created over fun, laughter and story-telling. 

  

OCBA FALL OATH OF ADMISSIONS CEREMONY: September 26, 2011. CFAWL participated in the OCBA YLS’ Fall Oath of Admissions Ceremony to welcome the newest members of the legal community to Orange County.  CFAWL was very proud of its members who were sworn in as members of The Florida Bar that night, as well as its very own member, Laura Lee Shields, who planned and hosted the entire event!

 

MENTORING LUNCHEON:  September 27, 2011. CFAWL hosted its first quarterly mentoring lunch of the 2011-2012 year.  Approximately 70 mentors and mentees met for a feature presentation entitled, “So Many Choices: What area of law best suits me?”, presented by Diana Tennis, Brenda London, Mary Ann Morgan and Denise Kim.  This luncheon served as an opportunity for mentors and mentees to gather with other members of the mentoring program to socialize and compare notes.  Both mentors and mentees walked away from the event having laughed and learned something new.  Many thanks to Mentoring Chair Elaine Lerner who did such a great job planning the luncheon!

  

TABLE FOR EIGHT - October 1, 2011.  CFAWL members Barbara Leach and Kayla Mudge co-hosted a Saturday morning brunch Table for Eight.  The Table was hosted on the first beautiful fall weekend, and attendees enjoyed delicious savories and sweet desserts while getting to know each other overlooking Lake Baldwin.

  

OCTOBER LUNCHEON - October 7, 2011.  CFAWL hosted a Pink-themed judicial luncheon, where Fifth District Court of Appeal Judge Jacqueline R. Griffin addressed attendees on the topic of: "The Wicked Witch Winds Down" - Reflections of a Merit Retention Judge." CFAWL sent formal invitations for this special event to all female members of the judiciary in Orange, Seminole and Osceola Counties, as well as male members of the judiciary who are CFAWL members. 

TABLE FOR EIGHT - October 9, 2011. CFAWL hosted a special Table for Eight, which we called "A Table for Them."  CFAWL members joined "Captain Mary Ann Morgan" at the Coalition for the Homeless to cook Sunday dinner and serve the families that evening. Table participants cooked lasagna, garlic bread, corn and brownies, a favorite dinner amongst the families, for 150!  Attendees left with a different perspective on homelessness and service, and will never forget the experience or the faces of the grateful children and their parents.
