OTHER LUNCHEONS
On Friday, January 8, 2010, Shelly Lauten, President of MyRegion.org spoke on "Connecting for Global Competitiveness." Imagine the possibilities if, rather than thinking just within our region, we combined Central Florida's economic drives (20th largest economy in the U.S.) with the Tampa Bay Region (19th largest economy). Together, the 13-county "Super Region" would be the 10th largest economy in the U.S. with the potential of being a major global economic competitor! These economic opportunities and possibilities are the subject of an 18-month think-tank project that Shelley discussed, as well as other regional activities undertaken by myregion.org. www.myregion.org.
November 6, 2009: Anne Franklin-Piper from Northwestern Mutual gave a presentation on “Holding on to your money when Uncle Sam wants it" and offered practical financial advice and suggestions.
October 2, 2009: James E. Kendrick, MD, from the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute gave a very informative overview of cancer research, women’s cancer issues, new and exciting advances, protocols and procedures in addressing certain cancers, and information on the use of surgery via robotics. A few pointers to keep in mind are that post-menopausal bleeding should be evaluated, women should not use unopposed estrogen, and pap exams do not pick up ovarian cancer. Early detection is the key!

The July 10, 2009, luncheon was held at the University Club, which was a new venue for CFAWL. In the days gone by, the University Club was a club for men; women were not allowed to be members. Times have changed. Now, the University Club opened its doors (and most importantly, its parking lot), for our topic on “Home Improvement 101: Doing it yourself and Tips for Dealing with Contractors,” presented by Kristen Beall. Kristin has a Master of Arts in Communications from the University of Central Florida (1997) and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Stetson University, cum laude (1996). She is a licensed Building Contractor (CBC058928) and a licensed Real Estate Salesperson (SL664833). She also is a Certified Green Professional, National Home Builders Association. Kristin was a charismatic speaker, who engaged our group with a wealth of information, great tips, and demonstrations.
